“Worshiper” evokes a tense moment of waiting: three strong, elegant women dance in front of three closed doors, juxtaposing large gestures and calm pauses. The dancers’ dramatic extended limbs and tightly contracted poses suggest alternately that they desire a visitor and fear an intruder.

“Illion” explodes onto the stage with quicksilver running to the sound of a ticking clock. The piece’s five dancers leave energetic traces and make brief constellations as they weave on and off stage, eventually cohering into an abstract group. The audience questions whether the slow extended movement provides escape from the running or the running escape from the slowness. Is it possible to outrun anything?

“Carrienon’s” childlike mood is infectious, enhanced by the whimsical steps’ precise relationship to the piano and violin score. Two dancers explore what seems to be an easy friendship on a relaxed day; a third dancer joins them and their interactions develop into friendly competition; by the time two more dancers arrive, a full-blown game of one-upmanship has emerged. Evoking the games children play, “Carrienon” is a light, humorous look at physical virtuosity.

“Overture and Underscore” updates the vision of the ballerina to a barefoot, modern, sensual woman. The clean lines of the choreography, as well as the clear, warm lighting, highlight the stunning physicality of the dancers and the various emotions playing across the dancers’ faces. With precision and contemplation, “Overture and Underscore’s” several sections subvert the traditional ballet vocabulary while maintaining its celebration of strength, passion, and grace.

“Initiation”, a large group piece, develops a distinctive vocabulary of jumps, angles, folds, and dramatic lines. Exploring the power of the group via the power of the body, the dancers dance in precise unison and vivid counterpoint to rumbling drums. Evoking the Greek chorus, African dances, and Martha Graham’s modern dances, Stanfield’s piece reveals a complex geometry of the body and of bodies working together.
